Abstract:

President Trump imposed a 10% tariff on all countries worldwide as well as reciprocal tariff on April 2 and referred to it as “Liberation Day.” The United States is seeking to free itself from its responsibilities in maintaining the international order in diplomacy, security, and the economy, and prioritize its own interests. At the same time, the Trump administration is expanding presidential authority and seeking to alter the democratic system based on the separation of powers and checks and balances that has existed since the founding of the United States. This seminar analyzes the current situation in the United States and discusses what strategies Japan should adopt as well.

Speaker: Dr. Tsuneo “Nabe” Watanabe (Senior fellow, Sasakawa Peace Foundation)

Speakers’ Profile:

Watanabe joined the Sasakawa Peace Foundation in 2016 after serving a senior fellow at the Tokyo Foundation and the Mitsui Global Strategic Studies Institute. He served several research positions including senior fellow at the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS) from 1995 to 2005. His publications include Asia Pacific Countries and the US Rebalancing Strategy [co-authored] (Palgrave Macmillan US, 2016), NATO and Asia Pacific [co-authored] (NATO Defense College, 2016). Watanabe received his D.D.S. from Tohoku University and his M.A. in political science from the New School for Social Research.
